Finding a safe and convenient place to transport things such as a chainsaw, hand tools, chains, etc. on a tractor can be difficult. If your tractor is outfitted with a Front End Loader ("FEL") then you probably find yourself placing these items in the bucket to transport them to your work location. This strategy can cause unnecessary damage to your tools and/or tractor (envision an expensive chainsaw falling out of the FEL bucket and the tractor running over it). Additionally, the versatility of the FEL is reduced since it is effectively committed to hauling tools and to be able to utilize the FEL at your work location you would need to park the tractor, dismount, unload the FEL, perform the tasks required of the FEL and then load everything back into the FEL. Our solution to this issue was to design a multi-purpose carrier which is mounted to the tractor's three point hitch. The main features of our "Ultimate Tractor Carryall" include the following:
a) The frame of the carrier is a standard "Carryall" which is commonly available from tractor equipment retailers. b) Standard pressure treated lumber and hardware was used to frame the platform, back and side walls. c) Hinges were mounted to the side walls to allow the sides to be folded away when not in use. d) Short pieces of pipe were installed to the rear of the carrier to transport items such as shovels and rakes. e) A wooden sheath was constructed to allow us to transport a chainsaw. f) A wooden box and metal rail at the rear can accomodate chains and other items. g) Eye bolts were installed in various places to serve as tie down points for bungee cords, ratchet straps, etc. h) A standard 2" hitch receiver was mounted to the rear of the carryall. i) The total cost of the carrier was approximately $305 before sales tax (Winter 2007 prices).
The materials that were used in the project are standard items found at most hardware stores. We decided on a width of 5 feet so that we could maximize the use of standard 10 foot dimensional lumber. We also needed to mix and match the lumber widths to accommodate the pre-drilled holes in the carryall frame.
